I am carving and painting a Cardinal. Could some of you please tell me what you spray as a final coat for Birds. I am going to spray the base and the driftwood mount with Gloss clear, but the Bird I'm not sure of its my first one. thanks Larry |

Not a bird carver but I would suggest a Krylon matte spray finish.

Larry, I don't put any type of gloss as a final coat. If you are using a quality paint such as Jo Sonya or Deco Art Traditions, there is no need for a gloss finish. For tthe legs and bill, I would use a low to medium sheen. Have a good time with it ,and post a picture when it is finished. I'd like to see it.. Ken |

I've not used the Krylon product, but generally apply a finish coat of Testor's Dull Coat on a songbird.

Thanks guys this is my first bird except for a Hummingbird that I did 2 years ago. When I finish it I will post it. Larry |

Krylon has a flat clear spray that seems to "pop" the acrylic color out without making it shiny. I don't know about oils.

Thank you sir I ended up getting the Krylon Matte which is what you are talking about I think. I have already sprayed the Bird and am waiting on the base to dry. I did'nt think about it and sprayed it with Poly takes longer to dry. Thanks Everybody I appreciate the advice. Larry |

There is a matte Krylon and a flat Krylon. The matt is a little bit more shiny. The flat is more like Testor's dull cote. Wish you the best, Dick

That Testor's Dull Coat is something else! You can spray the carving with any clear coat to give it the protective finish and then apply the dull coat to remove any or all of the gloss. I want to try using a matt finish with a detail brush after the dull coat is applied on a key few spots like eyes, bill or tops of feathers just to give a little shine and it will be almost like painting depth with clear. |
