Default Pine Giraffe

I have lots of basswood, tupelo, white and red cedar plus 22 roughouts in the shop and I can't believe I'm buying shelving boards to carve but these things really are fun to do.

This Giraffe is 25" tall (total) made from a 3/4" select pine board, Titebond III glue, Minwax stain and Satin Deft finish.

Great looking finished product, William. Thanks for sharing. So, you cut the roughout in three separate sections then glued them together? Wow.

He's fabulous William! Great shape and flowing lines! That's a B-I-G carving! How did you finish him? Is that pyrography and staining? Very nice indeed!

Hi Beth.

Most of the giraffe was made with 3 pieces with two more small pieces added for the head and base.
The hardest part was carving the inside of the legs and tail, I think the inside of all legs should be carved after gluing the neck and one leg section together and then glue the other leg section on. This is the way Lynn did one of his horses in the tutorial on his web site.

Thanks urbansheepdog, yes, a burner was used for the dark lines as a sort of bleed stop for the stain and then one coat of Deft sanding sealer and three coats of Deft clear satin wood finish.

Beth, here is a picture of all the pieces glued up before carving, and a front and side view.

Great stuff William. Gluing stock had never occurred to me except for lost body parts like ears and noses. Thank you for opening the window.

Thanks for the additional information and pictures, Bill. I'll have to look up Lynn's tutorial and learn how to do a carving in pieces like that. There's just so much to learn from you great carvers on this forum and so little time to read it all and try it all.

Please keep sharing your wonderful carvings.

Beth
