Hi, would like to help, but its almost impossible not knowing what area your working on. A suggestion, On the right of this page, they are advertising Carving Books, if you click on the photo you will find a book by Tom Matus on carving and Painting Decoys, priced at $19.95 Sounds like an excellent buy.

Another book that covers painting Mallard ducks are several books by Bruce Burk. His latest book is in color and has instructions on painting the Mallard.

An earlier book by Bruce covers the painting, but is not in color, although he indicates which colors to use and where to apply them.

The latest book sells for $34, however thru Amazon it can be purchase for around $23.

His earlier book published in 1972 can be purchased for around $4 or $5 as a used of course.

There is more discussion about carving and painting in the earlier book.

The title of the book is "Game Bird Carving".
