Hello all, I am an avid hunter and thought that I would try my hand at making some decoys. I have read in several places on this forum that there are copious patterns available for free but I haven't been able to find any. I am looking for a mallard drake pattern to start with. I am thinking about using Western cedar or Oregon cedar (as these are local woods). Can anyone point me towards mallard patterns that would be appropriate for someone just starting and who is hoping to shoot over the decoy? Thanks, Scott |

Here's a link to a site with some patterns. You can try it to see if somethere meets your needs. Mighty Layout Boys Resources You might try your local library too, or a carving club in your area, or buy a book with patterns for several species. If you already have a mallard decoy you could easily draft your own pattern using its dimensions. |

Thank you all so much. I appreciate your help. I tried the google approach and was very unsuccessful. I tried combinations of the words mallard, template, pattern, and decoy. That is how I stumbled across this message board. I have purchased Tom Matus, "Duck Decoy" at one of our local wood supply stores. It was a lucky find. Amazon says that they have a two month backorder on the book. Thank you for the other suggestions. Hopefully I can find something to get started on this weekend. Be well, Scott |

I have Tom's book and think you'll find a great deal of good info on carving and painting details. Enjoy the process and if you run into questions (which you surely will) don't hesitate to post again. Lots of good help around here. :-)
