Kimbies, If I was going to paint a summer tanager, I would do an internet search on google. On google there is a lot of reference and plenty of photos, approx. 149,000. Come to find out, news to me, this bird is the only all red bird in the United States, with a dark grey bill. I would go to Lori Corbetts, http:Whispering Eagle Studio, and read her painting demos on whites and on blacks. If the bird is one color, you could adapt her info provided into red. In doing a quick look at the first two photos, I see 6-8 different shades of reds. I would base coat the bird in a medium red and create a light shade or two or three, for the subtle differences. I would also create two or three darker shades for the highlights. I would also use a little diox purple, (sparingly for some highlights), a liittle burnt umber, and a little raw umber for highlighting.. I think that gives you an idea as to how I would approach your project. I hope that this helps. |

I hesitate to offer much in the way of painting suggestions. I do know enough to know that you have some very good help in Ken's reply. Regarding birds I might add another source of reference material. Here's a link to the bird forum on Naturescapes. There are some incredible bird photographers on this site. You can do a search on "summer tanager" if you are a member. It's not difficult to register and no fee. |
