Evie, All of us have first carvings. Your first actually looked like an otter. I thought wowthat's a big carving those guys started you on. Then I clicked on the second picture and realized what I didn't see in the first picture was someone holding the tail! (Glasses will be arriving soon)
I have to agree with Cliff, poor bugger was belly up in the last picture. Hearing there was another woman carver out there must have scared the toothpicks out of him.
Seriously, have fun and you'll be amazed how hooked you'll get carving. Your knives were beautiful!

Hi Wanda. the blue knife is bass wood. I just put some leather dye on it to make it pretty, and sprayed with some lacker.they work pretty good for now. I am using my new found skill on sharpening to good use. in my kitchen. all my knifes was so dull. now they are sharp. what a great thing to learn. . and yes there is lots of gales out there. I have met a few in the CCG. and I am just buzzing. even the guys, are so helpful. I do have to tell you. I have been practicing the chip carving. and dang , that is not that easy. I found the carving in the round much easyer. go figure. thanks again for all your relplys. Evie

Hey Evie...
Welcome to the other side.
Nice first piece, better than my first. A good idea is to put a little tag on him with the date so that years from now you'll know exactly when you started.
Now on a serious note... Do you ever sleep? What with the garden, the scrolling, (she's a really talented scrollsawyer for those who don't know), and every other thing you've got going on.
Looking forward to seeing future carvings.

Hi Jim, I thought I seen you in hear. thanks for the complements. I notice you didn't mention how bad I spell. HEHE. thanks. I am having fun, with this new adventure in carving. it is much more challenging then scrolling I must say. but all woodworks is fun. I did my first chip carving today. and dang. this is not so easy then I thought it would be. but only cut myself once. didnt bleed on the wood though. my chip carving knife has a round handle. will change that tomorrow. and I have the WB knifes coming soon. have lots of books off ebay. and learned alot about sharping. thanks for the welcome. Evie

Hey Evie, almost missed your thread. You made a really good start, just keep carving and you will get better and better. Joinning a carving club is a really good thing and a place where you can learn to carve. You did good girl!

Nice first piece. Lucky that you have found a guild to help you get going. The knives are very pretty. Did you make the entire handle or only shape it to fit your hand better. I like the finish you put on them. Happy carving!

Hi Toycarver. I do feel so lucky to find a great group. and they help me so much. and I am always happy when I go home. inspiered completely. the knives are made of bass wood. and I did make them to fit my hand. but didn't make the handales. they were, my first project from the group. I carved them, and then dyed them with leater dyes. and then sprayed them with poly. the chip carving nife I got from DRAKs . but didn't like the handle, it was round, and big in my hand, and so , I fixed it today. it is the green one. notice the notch in the thum aria. it fits my hand very well now. the chip carving is my first. not so good. but I did it. having fun. Evie
ps. sorry the pics are fuzzy.
