| | Re: My loon Excellent carving wow only been carving for a few months thats fantastic. We have lots of loons in the great white north in fact that is what we call our one dollar coin "A Loonie" because it has a loon on it.

| | Re: My loon Great carving, and a super fine paint job. The loon is a difficult bird to paint right.

| | Re: My loon Thank you all for your kind responses. My instructor - Harvey Welch wants the carving to go into some competitions here in Canada. So, with some trepidation - I will be entering it. I must admit to feeling nervous entering competition as I am such a newbie.
Thanks again everyone. |

| | Re: My loon Good carving, I like the black painting on the head, it looks like a matte finish was used....did you use acrylics or oil paint?

| | Re: My loon Actually I tried to stay away from black - only used it as the final detail stuff - but it does look very dark on the photo's.
The paint is jo sonya - it is acrylic with a matt finish...actually a gouache/acrylic mix.
Thanks for the compliment. |

Thanks for the compliment. | Just a suggestion regarding the tube color black. You may have heard of this aready but just in case you haven't. I learned in art class early on that a wonderful alternative to tube black is what we call 'artist black.' It's a equal combination of ultramarine blue and burnt umber. This combination makes beautiful blacks add more umber or blue depending on if you want a blue black or a brown black. Another color to add to the mix is pthalo-green for a green black. These combinations with a little white added makes really nice warm and cool grays.
