Great carving--beautiful job. Loons are an awesome bird and you captured it so well.

And...great paint hints from Kathy. I learned early to use white and black sparingly--and always "cut" them with other colors to reduce the harshness and make the final color more natural.

Can't wait to see your next carving.

Thanks to everyone with their kind words and helpful hints. You guys are a great community!
News update as regards to the loon.....it won first place at Winnipeg in a miscellaneous class(too big for miniature and too small for full size) of about 30 carvings. It won second place in BC, under intermediate waterbirds, miniature.

Outstanding ! and very well Deserved !!! I'd say you're a natural carver. Getting a ribbon coming out of the gate is No Small Feat. The work is exceptional, and They Said So. Kudo's

Wonderful piece of art. This one is in the running for the triple crown, along with BARBARO. Loons are such a majestic bird. We have a pair that return to our lake every year. We enjoy watching them.
I caught a nice pose of one of them. You can see it in the reference photos thread. "My wildlife photos"
