Carving and painting, absolutely superb. Got to ask, if that is your first duck, what have you carved before the duck. Impressive to say the least.

Thanks everyone for the kind replies. I got a tremendous amount of help from my mentor - Harvey Welch. Next weekend I plan on putting her into competition here in Saskatoon. Wish me luck!!!!!!!

Hugh - I've carved several birds before tackling the mallard hen. Been carving for less than a year. Took it up when a friend said she would like to take up carving and I offered to go with her....thought it would be fun. We each bought a book, and I jumped into the hobby with a robin. I LOVED it! Took a class from Harvey last winter and the rest they say is history. Harvey was so great and helpful during the class. I begged, cajoled, bribed him into mentoring me. He has been a wonderful influence on my work--allowing me the latitude to develop my own style while steering me in doing it correctly.

The mallard hen is my first duck. I've carved a total of 9 birds including the hen.

That is fantastic. Very few have the talent, and fewer still are able to develop such fine detail so quickly. It is addicting, but rewarding when you can create something so beautiful, as that mallard. Thanks for posting, I've saved the photo to look at.

I do believe you...its just hard to imagine that this is your first duck, even with the other carvings under your belt. Impressive!

Very, very nice! having carved just a few of these I know the time and effort involved. This one is exceptional. Please let us know how you make out in the competition. Looks like a winner to me!

The drake is next. I actually started both of them--to present as a pair. It took longer than I anticipated, so I stopped working on the male to paint the female. I still have allot of texturing to do on him and then it is back to the paintbrushes.
