Nicely done, Sam! Really a good first carving. As far as tools go, there are as many different approaches as there are carvers. Lots of folks use power as it cuts down the time roughing and can pour on some great detail. I like to use simple carving tools...mostly knives and v tools and gouges for the fins. Either way fish are fun to do. And if you are a fisherman, sometimes it's best to feel the body contours...very tactile approach and can help with the form.

Thanks for the comments guys, really appreciated.

I'd like to get to know hand tools, there is a wood carving course locally starting next month so I'll join there to see what I can learn. Hope to have another go at carving this weekend, probably try a trout again but bigger.

Will post some pics of the next project.

Very good first first project , you will see in each following project, areas of improvement . I have found working for shorter periods of time to be helpful, when i go back i find new areas to finish and detail.

Good looking first. I will agree with dating and numbering your carving. After you crearte a few carvings go back and look at your first you will see how you improve after a short time. Enjoy the process and keep it up.
Regards,

Michael

Great looking first fish, Especially with an arbotech as your primary tool. It really depends on how far you want to take this. I think this fish has a pretty neat look to it. You can still tell its a carving. Sand it, burn in scales, gesso, airbrush it... it just won't look the same. Lar

Hi all, sorry to interupt anyone's discussion but i live in west central Illinois. I have some large and unique pieces of raw walnut a couple are prob 2-3ft tall and 3 feet across, also have small logs ect like 12in across and all different lengths, and also 4 rootballs from very large walnuts. Can someone tell if there is anyone who will purchase these? If so can i have a contact number?, or what type of woodworker would use these. I know gunstocks but im just having no luck finding any buyer info online. Thanks and any help would be appreciated

Well, you succeeded! I think you can strive for whatever look you want in your carvings - Brown Trout in this case. Nothing at all wrong with leaving the flat spots where you shaped the blank into the final form. And, the painting is very much in keeping with the carving technique. I like it.

You can do lots of different techniques that would culminate with an effort to produce a most realistic piece of work. I'd say good for you...regarding acquiring some additional tools. Keep carving and learning the fish anatomy (pretty basic need but can be elusive to learn...just like birds). I always try to "bump it up a notch" from one carving to the next. Keeps the challenge front and center and that leads to some growth.

Again... good work and keep carving.
