Does anyone have a paint schedule for an eastern and western screech owl that they'd share with me? I've got one carved, but not painted--I know that the eastern is grayish in color and the western is more brown. I think. Donna_T

Thanks Charles. Your help will be greatly appreciated. I might even get it painted this winter! Donna

Donna, The Eastern screech can appear in either of two phases-red or gray. While the western usually is a gray, it sometimes appears as a brownish. To be accurate, lots of reference and research is a must. You will find plenty on screech owls. Looking forward to seeing your finished carving. |

Donna, to help you with the painting check out Sibley's basic birding book. On about page 68 (I think!) there is a drawing of 6 feathers that show the usual markings on feathers. Then when you read your reference it takes the mystery out of where all those spots should be located. Also check out the products section on Simchuk.com where Jerry has instructions (for sale) on painting both the eastern and western screech owl. Neat books! Happy carving and painting. Dick

Jerry Simchuk has book available entitled Carving & Painting the Western Screech Owl on his web site. He also says he will have a supplement to this book out in 2012 on painting the Eastern Screech Owl. Jerry's web site is at: Bronze Wood Fine Art Wildlife Sculptures |
