The neck joint is something I've struggled with for some time. Used different methods, some were OK others not so good, Others might not notice the joint, but I knew it was there, and wanted something permanent that would last. The people on this message board have been a great help to me. !!!

| Hi guys, A few years ago I saw a tutorial in the decoy forum and I think it was done by Tom Matus, anyway, it solved a few problems I was having and I have been doing it that way ever since. It sounds like you and several others use 5 minute epoxy to attach the heads and so do I but instead of using a dowel he used a heavy wire bent over to look like a closed staple with half of it in the head and the other half in the body, this way the drill holes do not have to be perfect and you only have to hold it in place for a few minutes and it's there to stay with no clamping needed. As Ken mentioned removing some wood in the head and body so only the outside rim of the head and body makes contact and will achieve a tighter fit and let the epoxy fill the void. Kulis Karvit is used primarily by bird carver's for filler because you can burn it and it will not chip out if it's thin. One thing I have found while burning it is that if you use high temperature it is harder to match the burn line from wood to filler. The burner will leave a slight "V" in the wood where the top of the burn is slightly wider than the bottom but the burn on Kulis Karvit is not wider at the top of the burn it's more uniform like this "I". Lots of suppliers carry Kulis Karvit but I think this place in Ohio makes it. Kastaway.com :: Carving Supplies Bill ^v^ Last edited by William; 06-18-2009 at 11:51 PM. |
