Here's what I come up with. I sketched this from a Tony Hillman shorebird book and scaled it up to ful size. It's not exact and not to perfect scale but should give you some idea of where to go with your project. If you need further reference you might pick up that Carving shorebirds book by Anthony Hillman. It's a good book with really decent patterns. |

Went through my reference for the Heron, my original pattern was from Gordon Stiller Patterns, its protected, so can not post it. His patterns are inexpensive, give a lot of good detail. simply take the pattern to a map or photo shop (Staples) and have it enlarged. My full size pattern, was enlarged, section by section on my little scanner printer, then taped together. I've changed it over the years to suit, have made several for garden birds. Hope this helps.

Al, Thank you for the drawing, I am sure this will be of great help to my project. I am planning on doing a simple carving for the yard, and maybe a decorative for my Sunroom to go along with my Swan. Hugh, I have thought abought the Stiller pattern, and have looked at the catalog I got from them last year at the World's in Ocean City. I may pick up a copy of the pattern this year. Thank you for the tip. Thank you both for the input. To all a happy and safe new year! Regards, Michael |

I carved a full scale using a pattern from a pull-out in Woodcarving Illustrated (I think). This was a few years ago. I used 2x6 wood glued together. I used rebar for the leg (one) and mounted it on a piece of tree. I will try to find a picture. |
