Joy: I was surprised to see the holes in the wood when I smoothed it out and got rid of the dust... Looking more closely at the raw wood, it seems that's just the way it is...

Sharon: I agree: they're fiesty little critters. When I was leading Scouts hiking, we used to go past a place called "hummingbird corner" in Idylwild, CA, on the way up Mt. San Jacinto. We took quite a few photos of Scouts standing under a feeder at the corner with hummingbirds perched on their hair, their shoulders, etc. The Scouts thought it was great that such a small bird would quite willingly perch on them to rest for a moment...
