Default Hummingbird

A little hummingbird, waiting for spring. The bird is 3.5 inches from tip of beak to tip of tail, and carved from quarter-sawn padauk. The branch is crab apple, and the base is walnut. All finished with clear water-based varnish.

WOW Claude, That is beautiful. They band hummers here on our ranch, and teach college courses on it. So after having hundreds of them here I can say that hummer of yours is a beauty,
Phyllis

Thanks! Padauk is a very hard wood, and the grain runs straight along the beak. I used my Dremel for the beak, but made sure it was turning so it always turned toward the tip of the beak - that way, there was no chance the burr could catch in the wood and break the tip. Final shaping of the beak was done with a small sanding drum on the Dremel...

A real beauty! I love the "holey" texture of the wood which contrasts beautifully with the satiny finish.

Claude, it's simply lovely! I love watching those fierce little birds. We have quite the number of them here. There's a couple pairs that stay here year round and we get the migrating ones also which causes a lot of heated little battles between them all. When I hand water in my nursery there's two that will get within inches of my face when I turn the water off. When I turn the water back on and squirt a fine mist in the air they dive through it and then sit up on the lath prining themselves.Amazing little creatures!
