Hola Tarik! Nice work. It's great to talk to someone from Chile! Especially a woodcarver. Chile is where I first became interested in the art of woodcarving, especially the caricature part of it. My wife, two boys and I spent two wonderful years living in Santiago back in the early 70's. I worked at the U.S. Embassy as a Communications Officer. Don't know how old you are but those were exciting times with Allende, demonstrations, coups, etc. But enough of that.

There was a caricature carver located in Santiago who went by the name of "Zerreitug". At least that is how he signed his pieces. For some reason he signed his name backwards. His real name was Gutirrez. He sold his work at a gift shop on Alameda, just up the street from the Moneda Palace. With a growing family I wasn't able to afford his work. However, years later, in Leningrad, USSR of all places, a friend of mine who had several of his carvings ask if I could repair one that was damaged in shipment. It was a cowboy with a guitar whose hat was broken to the extent that it had to be completely replaced. The wood he used was very similar to basswood, soft, no grain and it cut like butter. I still have a small piece of the crown of that hat. I treasure it.

If you like caricature carving I'd highly suggest that you try and trace this artist as he would be a terrific contact and source of information.

I've seen the work of Gutierrez, in several subway stations there are exhibitions of his work representing colonial scenarios. Really amazing, I'll try to get some photos. He is not longer in Alameda butI've heard of a shop in Las Condes that could be his... I'm going to do a search.

Hola Tarik. Really glad Gutierrez is still around. I've tried searching for him through Google etc. but no luck. If you can help track down some photos of his work or a website that has something on him I'd sure appreciate it as would other carvers. He was and is a master as far as I'm concerned. Checked out your website. Neat. Love those dogs.

La escena que recrea el momento en que Cristóbal Colón enrolaba - junto a los hermanos Pinzón - marineros para su travesÃ*a que partÃ*a en el Puerto de Palos es la temática del diorama “Colónâ€� recientemente terminado y que está listo para ubicarse en la estación del mismo nombre de la LÃ*nea 4 y que estará ubicada en avenida Tobalaba con Eleodoro Yáñez.
Este diorama demoró cerca de 4 meses en realizarse, pues, además de crear las figuras, fue necesario reunir la mayor cantidad de antecedentes históricos para poder recrearlos de manera muy real.
“Colón� fue realizado por iniciativa del artista especialista en tallado de madera Rodolfo Gutiérrez (Zerreitug).

Un poco de historia...
Hace 12 años que los usuarios de Metro disfrutan con las recreaciones que se representan en los nueve dioramas instalados en distintas estaciones. El primero fue el de Salvador y luego siguieron el de Universidad Chile, Baquedano (LÃ*nea 1), Cal y Canto y Cerro Blanco.
El autor de estas representaciones, hechas sobre la base del trabajo de tallado de madera, Zerreitug empezó con este arte hace más de 40 años y se dedicó a los dioramas hace más de 20, al realizar las maquetas que se encuentran en la Casa Colorada. “De niño me gustaban mucho los personajes y la historia y siempre me imaginaba armando escenas y jugando con los monitos�, dice Rodolfo Gutiérrez.
Este año el artista está trabajando en otros dos dioramas para las estaciones PrÃ*ncipe de Gales y Puente Alto. Él correspondiente a esta última estación tendrá las dimensiones más grandes que hasta ahora se hayan visto, pues será de 2,80 metros de frente y 2,0 metros de fondo, y representará lo que era el mismo lugar en el año 1925, cuando por ahÃ* pasaba el antiguo tren Llano del Maipo y el del Regimiento Ferroviario de Puente Alto.
Con la instalación de estas piezas artÃ*sticas, Metro cumple su compromiso de continuar entregando a los usuarios algo más que un eficiente, seguro y moderno medio de transporte. Por medio de la representación de instantes que en algún momento se vivieron en determinado entorno, brinda la posibilidad a los pasajeros de Metro de Santiago de conocer un poco más de la historia
