Decided to do one in Western Cedar wood [ excess wood from a log building]. Found it didn't detail very well [may be my skill level], so I proceeded as a modified Slick side. Came out OK, but I will never carve in Western Cedar again!

Good job! I like it! You have just proven that a carver must be a "problem solver". Thanks for posting.

I was hoping some one carves a lot with Western Cedar [white used in log homes] and would share their experience. Thanks for the comments

great job on this deke! All the ones I've done have been in basswood or butternut (and one in Pawlonia). I'm more a fan of the smoothies anyway! Mark |

Old Scout, I love carving with cedar. I carved a shark (its on my web page below) and loved how it turned out, I ended up carving about five more. It was easy to carve with a knife but detail tends to be rough. The pieces finished nicely with the wood grain showing. I live in Michigan and sharks are not to hot here. Thats one bad thing about wood carving, is that one things inspires another and now I'm thinking polar bear. I'm not suppose to do this because I have so many carvings in the works. Oh well whats one more?

Old Scout, I carve in Western Red Cedar with a few bits in alder or that pine wood cut Ookpik. I can't do detail in WRC, the wood structure is just too brittle. I find it so bad that attempting detail is too tedious and a 90% chance of the bit popping off anyway. I am amazed ant what you got away with. I'll have to try harder. Sweeping curves, deep inlets, that's about it. Anything (for me) with a radius of less than 1/2" and I'm just asking for trouble. Sometimes a rasp and sandpaper is the only option. Bob De.'s shark is an excellent example of a good work in WRC. |
