Welcome to the forum!

You don't mention where you are located. If you look over on the left side of the screen, and click on Carving Clubs, then on the next page use the pulldown to select your location, you may find one or more carving clubs within driving distance. Contract the club and find out when/where they meet and go to one of the meetings. Should be able to get lots of advice about tools, patterns, etc.

Books are available on this site by Chapel Publishing, Tools by Foredom and Gesswein have been the most reliable for me. Detailing with the Razertip Burning system goes without question, the most dependable, and best service. For patterns, Gordon Stiller patterns is a good place for a beginner to start. To find each of these names, simply Google each name.

Welcome!

I'd suggest this magazine (Wood Carving Illustrated) and also Wild Fowl Carving magazine, and also, Tom Matus' book on carving antique style decoys. Even if you're not interested in making a decoy look antique style, it's a great book on carving decoys and one of my favorites.

Welcome and glad to see another bird/animal carver on the site. I would recommend to try your hand with a knife and a block of wood. My first carving was done with a knife (see in my web page below), now I use some power tools but prefer to let the chips fly. Once you get bit by the carving bug you will never give it up. Have fun and let the chips fly!
