| | Greater Scaup This life size carving is bass wood and painted with oils.
It was entered in the Ocean County Gunning and Decoy Show Sept. 2005 and received an honorable mention in the Decorative category.
Two other entries received an honorable and 1st place....I'll post them when the other roll of film is developed.

| | Re: Greater Scaup I just spent some time talking with Anthony Hillman (a world-famous wildfowl carver and author of many books). He said he paints with oils because it gives him better coverage in one coat "That way I only need to paint the duck once," he said.

| | Re: Greater Scaup I'll definately have to give iols a whirl..........now I'll have to go out and get some........basic colors I guess. I just bought a whole whack of acrylics from a closing out sale at a craft shop..$1.89 on sale for half price. A buck a bottle! not bad and they are good paints.

They are water soluble oil paint (I’m not really sure how they do that) and dry to the touch in just about a day when applied thickly (like you would do when painting on canvas), and a lot quicker when diluted. They can be diluted with water or any of the things that are usually used to thin regular oils. And, they can wash up with water. But they still have the same blending and working qualities of traditional oils.
I have tried some on a few paintings just to see how they are, and as far as how they handle (blend, etc.) I can’t tell much difference between them and regular oils, but I really like their fast drying time and the fact that they wash up with water. Eventually I think I am going to give them a try on a carving.

| | Re: Greater Scaup David, I have been giving oils consideration. First, I would need new brushes?? What about flow medium, and varnish. I suppose they would be different also?? What else would I need to consider to change to oil paint. Looked up Cheap Joes, and it dosen't seem too expensive to buy enough paint to start. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
