| | Re: Great Blue Heron Dave! Wow! What a great piece of art. You have the whole package. There's as much style and effort in the mount as the heron. I have a blank ready for the heron, and had it before you mentioned you were going to carve one, but mine's still in the cupboard; yours is done and beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Mike |

I have been looking for a pattern of a great blue heron and remembered that someone had carved one recently so I looked thru these past threads and found it. I would appreciate it if you would tell me where you found that pattern, I like that particular pose verses the others I have found, their necks are more s shaped or they are feeding. Any help would be appreciated
P.S Your great blue and the crawdad are great |

| | Re: Great Blue Heron Well done Dave;
BTW Whiskers "Carving Large Birds by Bill Dehos and Patrick Spielman, ISBN 0-8069-4742-x" has a Great Blue Heron pattern, pose similar to Dave's rendition .
Don't even ask why I got a Bird carving book, lord knows I aint no bird carver...other than Xmas and Thanksgiving.

P.S Your great blue and the crawdad are great | Well now, let me tell you "with a little help from my friends!" LOL I got a set of line patterns from Al Archie and Donna also sent me some and some other info on colors etc in addition I bought a book around the same time from "Wildfowl Carving and collecting" called reference Guide: Waterbirds" by Dan williams. Now that is never enough for me so I downloaded a bunch errrr....BUNCH! of photos from the web on great blues....now with all that information I can assure you.....you will be totally confused! ha ha...but thats the way I seem to do most things.....totally confused LOL. I did start with a roughout from beaverdamdecoys and I am not sure that is of any great benefit since you can do a cutout with the bandsaw and be at the point in short order anyway...I will say that the small feathers on the back of the head, I carved and would not do that again, I would use slivers of brass...also the feathers on the breast...I am not a particular fan of using other materials, but am not a fan of beating my head against a wall either LOL....if and when you get to the legs...that was a whole new set of problems and too long to go into here, when you do get there, send me an email and I will go over what I did.....probably not much help, if I can find my file on the herons maybe I can copy the drawings and send you a set....bottom line is, most of this you will have to do on your own by looking at photos of live herons..imho | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
