fisrt carving

ok everyone i just did my first fish carving and put it on picturetrail.com if you want to see it the link is picturetrail.com membername carvers-r-us and the password is carve .sorry the pic isnt very good and dont expect alot i dont have an airbrush or a wood burner for the scales so it has none Â*

That's a downright good start for a first carving! The gill and mouth placement and development look to be excellent. If you have or can get even a cheap woodburner (like a walnut Hollw) for under 20 bucks, you can easily make burner tips for doing scales. Check on 'other stuff' in picturetrail and I have posted a diagram of the tips I make. They can be turned on a lathe or just filed down while chucked into a drill.

Scale and pattrern marks can be done with a dry brush technique without investing in an airbrush. This also works really well for blending in other bdy colors between sides, back and belly.

If you check down in the wildlife section, there is a walleye that I did with very little airbrush.....most was done with drybrush technique......you really don't need an airbrush.

NIce job on your first carving we will be expecting to see many more from now on. You have been bitten by the woodcarving bug be careful it is awful addicting.

Mysticpeterson.....From my perspective, there is nothing 'mystic' about it, you got a great first carving! Keep it up and show us more pics as the carving progress'es. Again, great job and always keep your first piece, you;ll appreciate it in the future. Coffeeman

Great first effort--great any effort. Each thing you try will add to your knowledge--try one thing--then another...see what works and what doesn't. I knew a guy who had his fish all painted and didn't like the look so he stripped it and started over. The first wasn't that bad but the second time results were great. He learned as much 'what not to do' as he learned what 'to do' and isn't that what learning is all aboutl There was an article in WCI (I think) a few years ago that showed how to use large-hole screen wire to spray over to get the scale look with just painting.

Keep up the great work. Glad to add you to the ranks of avid wood carvers. Whatcha going to do for an encore?
