Speaking of fish, I want to try carving one after my next bird is done. I'm looking for a good instructional book for someone who's never never carved a fish before. Any suggestions? :-/

I'd recommend 'Carving Fish and Pond Life' by Richard Roth (don't say D1ck) for starters. Â*It has several patterns of fish, and a painted turtle, which I sort of adapted just lately. Â*He gives detailed carving instructions and full paint schedules and instructions. Another is 'Freshwater Fish Carving' by James Fliger. Â*Several good patterns and also the full paint schedules. Both of these are Schiffer books. Â*A little pricey, but worth the money. I've also found 'Fish Carving' by Bob Berry very helpful, although not as thourough as the other two. As for patterns, I would suggest you contact Ed Walicki of Fishcarver Inc. Â*Find him in Novi, Michigan at www.fishcarver.com Â* He as a full site on just fishcarving, and has an excellent full size pattern book out for a very reasonable price. Â*I've used and adapted several of Ed's patterns. Â*I wasn't too thrilled with his walleye or perch patterns, but by using an opaque projector and photos of real fish, was ale to adapt his patterns with the real thing, and they came oout (Canadian proununciation, there) great. Â*At least I thought so! I just put up a photo of a brrok trout I did from Roth's book (well sorta). over at http://www.picturetrail.com/carvers-R-usÂ*There are a couple other from them down the page a ways. Al |

Thanks Al, I found those books on the web and look really good. Maybe I can add them top my Christmas list if it's not too late ![]() I took a look at your fish on picturetrail.com. Those are beautiful. I really like that walleye. I just became interested in the fish carvings at the last competition I entered. There was a smallmouth bass mounted on a plaque and I thought 'there's something I want to try'. I don't have much luck catching them, so I'll carve myself one! ![]() By the way, thanks for the Canadian pronounciation there, eh. Chris.
