Default Fish Carving

I hope I don't wear out my welcome by posting too many carvings, but I got a late start at joining the forum and have a lot of things sitting around that I have not shared with anyone outside of the family and feel like I have a lot of catching up to do.
This is a fish that I did for my wife as a gift for a co worker. He has a cabin on some land with a small lake. He wanted something to decorate his "man hut" as he refers to it.
This fish is I believe what you refer to as styalized carving if I am incorrect please correct me. I usually paint my fish with more washes and less layered but this time I was just trying to do something different. please feel free to comment or critique.

Great carving, Mark! That should go well in a "man hut". Or on any shelf or mantle as far as that goes!

That's a great fish carving. I hope you continue to post photos of all of you work. Carver's can never have enough knives, tools, or photos for reference. And we just love seeing other people's work.

Simplyme, Al, Cannukcarver, Ron, and simon.

Thanks for viewing and for the kind comments. Becareful what you ask for because, I still have quite a few carvings left to photograph and post. Simon I have often kidded about taking one of my fish carvings to the lake and waiting until the right moment when people are around and casting it out and pulling it in just to see the reaction. The way my luck goes the game warden would find some reason to fine me.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Mark, you did a great job carving this fish plus your painting is super! A stylized carving is deliberate flowing of the wood in the carving with out details, all curved and rounded surfaces doesnt and in most cases have any realism in it.Thats not the objective with a stylized carving.Smooth & just the ideas of the carving and its curves is a stylized carving.

Entrying several wood carvers shows,Ive seen all types of stylized carvings and course none had any painting on them.
Im not cutting down this excellent fish you carved but just telling you about stylized carvings. :::Keep up just like you are doing and man you did this one just right!!::::

This is a stylized beaver I carved from butternut

Forrest,
Thanks for setting me staright on the stylized carving thing, that is exactly what I was looking for. In my mind I thought that if you did a carving that was not exactly realistic it was stylized. When I get a chance later on I will post a couple of my other fish to show you the difference between those and this one and as to why I thought this one was more of a stylized carving. That is the one bad thing about being self taught, sometimes you just teach yourself wrong and don't know any better. One of the big reasons I joined here was to broaden my horizons and correct some of the things I may have picked up on incorrectly. The best way to get better is to hang out with the best.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Mark

Are you primarily a fish carver? Or do you just happen to carve a few fish??

If you are a fish carver, I have a few places that will give you lots of info on carving fish if you are interested.
