Big Wayne .. The Raven your are talking about is a book that a person wrote using the raven as a tool for their story. Just like the Big Bad Wolf.. Even thou you where born under the month of the Raven in Haida culture does not mean you are bound by it … Unlike a horoscope where you are a sign and that is that.

I use this calendar when people ask me to carve them a totem pole. Totem Poles tell a story or reflect

Family lineage. So if you wanted to carve a Totem Pole that represents your family you could use these symbols to represent each member. You would be the raven and your other family members would be the other animal symbol that their birth month falls under.

By the By … I hate that book too …
Alfie

Hi Fishgap...thank you for clarifying the points about Totems! I guess I didn't really explain well enough about their significance, and didn't mean to imply that everything has a religious significance or that totems etc. are worshipped or prayed to. I was taught by my NA great-grand-dad (and my beliefs are) that all things should be respected and that we can (and should) communicate with our Cousins, as they often bear lessons, etc. There is only one Creator. We are all connected and bound by the same Spirit. I suppose that many people not familiar with these beliefs can (and often DO) mis-interperet this deep reverence for all Creation as worship. (I get called "Pagan" an awful lot...I got so tired of trying to explain things, that I simply smile and wear the label proudy...grin).

You did not come across as agressive at all. I appreciate your clarifications.

PS: BobD...see what you started???

Thanks Alfie
I thought I was the only one that hated it

I still contend that he was not trying to symbolize anything
That is what he saw and that us what he wrote
Either that or he was on some mighty good drugs

Amazing how people want to interpet what other people had in mind

Even more amazing how we remember junk from our childhood and cannot remember what happened yesterday

and this was close to 45 years ago

I do like your totems and carvings

HI all! I would have to say that the bear is my totem. Even though I was born in Aug. I was out hunting last fall, it was very quite in the woods. When I heard a noise that I thought was a deer at least thats what I was hoping. I only had a black powder gun with me and no round ball. to make a long story short it was not a deer but a large black bear that I came face to face with. He looked right at me and just kept walking. but in the direction I had to go!I jumped up and scared him.He went one way and I the other. I thanked my lucky stars that day.
