New to wood carving, have always tried but would like to become a little more serious about it. I thought I would try to carve just a feather first and so far the size, shape seem to be OK. What I looking for is a book that would be good for a new carver to use as a referance for the patterns of the actual vains that are to be burned in before painting. Any and all help is greatly apprecated. Thanks Charlie

Charlie, the real thing is the best reference you can get. I've collected feathers for years, a few of them, I copy on my scanner, then print them. There are a lot of different feathers on different birds. Primary flight feathers, Tertials, Tail Feathers, are hard, stiff feathers, larger quills, barbs that wrap around the ends like little threads. the mantle, shoulder feathers are more of a loose feather, small pin like feathers starting around the bill and growing larger as they progress along the head. Learning feather flow, progression of feathers from small to large, is an art in itself. Take a bird apart , feather by feather, tape a few of each type on a piece of light cardboard, make a file of it, photos of the bird, types of feathers, great reference tool for carving. You will gain an understanding of the markings of the feather, each little barb has a separate mark, that make up the larger design. I could write more, but don't want to bore you. Others will come up with information , Hope this helps. Cheers.
