Feather Carving

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share the feathers my Mom and I worked on at a recent carving workshop put on at Lee Valley with Rick Wolcott as the instructor.

The one with the splits is the one I carved and the other one is the one Mom did. They're carved in basswood and painted using acrylics. It was a lot of fun and we both plan on doing several others in different styles.

Thanks for sharing your (woodduck?) feathers with us. They are way too cool and a great way to get a good understanding of how feathers are structured and painted.

Have fun making more--I've done them in shades of blue--just for the heck of it and used them as pins.

Thank you for your wonderful comments. Yes, they are Wood Duck side pocket feathers, it's wonderful that you recognized them for what they are!

Both Mom & I want to start carving birds so this type of carving should help prepare us for it, at least that would be the hope. We have some more blanks of other feathers, blue bird, stellar jay, crow and another one that for the life of me I don't remember what is right now, so they should be fun too.
