| | Re: Ever carved an eagle? Paul,
I probably cme across wrong. I am not a bird carver and I would reference birds if that is what I carved.
What I was trying to get to, is, I carve or whittle as relaxation and don't worry to much if I have, say the right amount of feathers or whatever. I have carved several owl but not to the relizations of yours. They were cute owls as my little bride calls them.
In carving different subjects and not sticking to one area, like birds, I don't research the subject. Like Santa clause. We all know what a Santa looks like or what we perceive what one looks like and carve it.
Probably will do the research and have reference articles and picture when I do carve a Red Tail Hawk or whatever.
I do not disagree with the research or using reference material. But I will say that a lot of carvers, probably don't use references on every carvings.
Thank you for your insight and willingness to help us out. |

| | Re: Ever carved an eagle? Thank you, Paul for your review and very kind words! It's been an honor to work on this series, as I have his sets in their original format and have guarded them jealously due to their ephemeral nature (blue prints, which fade and get more brittle evey time they're exposed to light). Last thing I ever thought I'd be doing was working on reference I've held in such high esteem for years. Getting to know Denny has been an experience, too...
If you do buy the book, be sure to let Denny know how you feel about it. That goes for any of the rest of you who've purchased the book. His phone number and snail mail address is listed in the book. He is a pretty down to earth fellow and as he says, "I've never met a stranger."

| | Re: Ever carved an eagle? For me, it was not a questiion of IF it was a question of WHEN. This book is so chock full of needed reference material that I had decided that I would not carve another eagle without it.
Didn't have to!! Diana (wife) has been after me to carve some "Kachina type" figures for her from some cypress knees I have on hand. She had found a reference book (expensive!) on Kachinas and their Carvers and told me she was going to order it.
My response of, "Why don't you order 'The Illustrated Eagle' for me?" received the spousal seal of approval. So, it's in the mail. |

| | Re: Ever carved an eagle? The best book on Eagles I have seen is "The American Eagle" by Tom and Pat Leeson. It is chock full of great pics. Anyone getting ready to carve an Eagle would be well served with this book.

| | Re: Ever carved an eagle? Can anybody tell me what WCI issue the review for "The Illustrated Bald Eagle" was in? I missed it.
Also, I went to check the book out at the Fox Chapel website, and the preview, i.e. "Look Inside" Java Window opened, but there wasn't anything to look at. Is it me, or is it Fox's problem?
Thanks! |

| | Re: Ever carved an eagle? I just recieved a copy of the book this morning..............WOW, awesome!!!! Nothing to stop me from trying a full Eagle now, but time! (lots of other things to finish first) But I'll get there.
My congratulations to Lori and her friend, Denny Rogers. A fantastic piece of reference work. I'll be putting it to good use immediately with another cane, this one a commission.

| | Re: Ever carved an eagle? Well folks, I spent an enjoyable evening reading and studying the book "The Illustrated Bald Eagle". I only wish the rest of my reference books were as well done! This book is a definate "must" for anyone carving an Eagle. Me thinks my next Eagle cane will be better in detail by far, than the last.
The book is laid out well, key drawings all give scale and enlargement % , and there are plenty of close up photographs and sketches to provide you with a perspective for any possible configeration of a carving. Gives skelital information, movement drawings and lots and lots of feather information. The colour information section is so complete, even a color blind old sailor like me can comprehend it.
How could it be improved? A bit more information on the eye would be useful, and a individual look at the main feathers (primaries, secondaries, tails,) the body ones are there, but not the big wing and tail ones. Perhaps that's for the second edition.
Over all....this book is a "must have" for raptor carvers, and anyone who just enjoys the Bald Eagle! I wish all of my ship reference books we as well done, or even one of them! Great work Denny Rogers and Lori Corbett! ***** five star rating, out of five.
