Default Eagle Eyes

Where do you order them from? I came across flat yellow eyes.. but I'm not sure this is what I'm looking for if they goe on an Eagle.

Thanks.

The last time I got bird and fish eyes from somewhere other than Wasco, I got them from Sugar Pine Carving. They've got different grades and you can use "contact us" to verify the size you need. My theory is if you're going to the trouble to carve a bird, put a good eye in it to help it look the best.

You can check the Wasco website, or I've gotten eyes from the Big Dog at Woodcraft Supply in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Hope that helps.

Marci MN -

You might try these folks: www.woodcarvers.com.
They also include an eye chart on the online catalog.

Do a google search...........you can run the gamut on the prices of glass eyes...anywhere from 90 cents to 3 or 4 dollars for a pair of eyes....well worth a little searching. imo (trying to remember where we last bought ours...believe it was thru a taxidermy shop?) And we bought some that were clear glass with the black pupil, very reasonable and you put the color in the back you want.)

This is a Canadian site that I order from quite regularly, the eyes they sell are real glass and made specifically for bird carving, something to check out anyways.

The correct eyes for bald eagles are hard to find. Yellow is not the correct color. They should be “straw” colored, which will look yellow when put in the carving. Secondly, eagles have a limbus ring around the eye. This is a dark circle around the edge of the eye. You can order eyes with these two specifications from:

A carving friend orders his eyes from www.tohickonglasseyes.com and I have purchased eyes from him. These have been very satisfactory.

I order my eyes from www.vandykestaxidermy.com/ and highly recommend them. Even though we got off to a rocky start.

I was ordering eyes for a coup[le of bald eagles and wanted 10mm. All of the details are not important; but, you should see a 10mm pupil on a 25mm base. Weird. The head of my eagle was about 25mm!

Since the eyes were not in stock, I had to pay a “set up” charge of about $15 or so. It made the eyes more expensive than the $3.00 or so in the catalog. I had ordered several pair and was “looking” at about $40.00 worth of useless eyes.

I called the company and was told that the head of the “glass eye” department was on vacation and there was nothing they could do until she returned in a week or so. She called me as soon as she was back on the job and explained that her employees were not familiar (they are now) with the requirements of woodcarvers (ordered by the size of the whole eye) and had made them as taxidermists order (apparently specifying the size of the pupil put on a life size eye (the weird eyes I received).

Anyway, she had put the eyes I ordered in the mail at no charge. Now, I call in my order. I do highly recommend Vandykes and like dealing with them.

If your eyes are for a bald eagle you should order the “straw” color eye with the “limbus” black ring around the edge.

The eyes on the left is my order and on the right the ones I received on the first “go round.”

Paul,
The first ones would have worked fine if he had a big fish stuck in his craw! Thanks for the info, good to know!
