Chuck, I would ask the judge(S) why your did not get a ribbon.
I love it and the contrast of natural basswood and butternut sets it off. Love the finish.
I am not a judge but," I know what I like and I like it".Phrase borrowed from Hugh P.

this was a local show-- and i have shown under this judge before and didnt do well- he is a bird carver and likes minatures. it was an animal bust class and the first two places were very small carvings of wild cats-- and he placed third a larger horse bust-- that had the halter carved complete with buckles and rings-- a very nice carving-- i would not have traveled and shown under this judge. he didnt like any of my relief carvings-- nor did he place a nationally known relief carver-- so who knows-- last time i asked for a critique- he was fair- with his criticism-- i just wont show under him again-- i wont go so far as to name the judge-- this is his opinion and it was friday-- i have gotten ribbons on similar carvings and will again-- ihave almost finished a butternut horse cut from the same pattern-- maybe ill put it on a basswood base?
