Default Dove Patern

I just received Woodcarving Illustrated Holiday 2008 issue 45.The Dove Ornament would be an exelent carving to hone up on my feather texturing and burning and get a Christmas ornament at the same time. When I looked at the patern I noticed both wings almost identicle both underside wings.I hope I am correct and the rear wing should be the topside and the primaries and coverts should overlap opposite to the front wing. Whats your thoughts should the patern be modified?

That certainly could be done , but the dove is made as a sillouette, with the right wing turned as the left wing. I don't think it would be as attractive turned so the underside of the right wing was showing.
If you view the dove as having the right wing relaxed or dropped, and the left wing lifted, it would be OK.

Thanks Hugh for your quick reply.I carve mostly birds in the round and like to get them more anitomikaly correct. I had a hard time seeing two wings pointing back as underside wings I guess I need to look at some carvings as being more artsey and pleasing to look at.Thanks for your coments great forum great chatting
Gordo.

Thanks Gordo, like yourself I carve mostly birds in the round, and spend a lot of time trying to get the anatomy correct. Its relaxing to make a simple ornament that can be done quickly.
