Default Cougar finished

Hi all
I am submitting a cougar that I carved from M.C.Guldans book on carving animals.Overall,I,m pleased with the carving{its not as good as hers, but, what the hey}I know that the paint job leaves something to be desired, but, well,I,m still learning.Painting is something I haven,t learned yet,but I,m trying.
Aside from the paint job,I would love to know how I can improve my next carving.
Thanks alot
Mark F.

Hi Mark,

The over-all pose and general shape is good. I am not familar with the persons work that you went by so I can't comment on that, however, the thing that pops out to me is the need to get more detail into it and to study the anatomy for that particlar pose. If you would like I could copy your photos and draw some changes on them and post those for you? knowing how the stucture changes with difgferent actions can make a world of difference in your carving. Good job!

I think the ears are just a bit small and need to be farther apart, also think the forehead is a bit too long....take a look at this.

Hi-Ho
Your absolutely right, the ears are to small and close together.Funny how someone else has to point out little things like that.Just to close to the project to see right I guess. Thanks for the input folks, appreciate it.

You have done well on the carving. Your painting skills will improve with practice and lots of reading of WCI and other research essentials. Might I suggest a modification to the position in the next cougar, perhaps drop the stance to closer to the ground, like a cat stalking. Texture the fur by stronger burning will define the fur more. Good work.

Take up Nancy-CA's offer to help with the drawing She does some awesome work. Other suggestions are right on as well. Wood burning in texture would help with the hair but you can get the same effect with the right brush and paint selection. I am not that good at hair so others would be a better reference.

Nice carving and work. It is a project that I would be very proud of.
