After seeing the fruits of your labors, with the wire, and epoxy i think i remember a substabce used in the arts and crafts when making flowers out of shaped wire, i dont think it was for kids but my kids went through a stage of playing with it.

the results were that of stain glass if you made the flowers intricate of wire the viscus thick plastic stuff you dipped the wire works into got covered and the film covered the wire and made a film across the loops of wire, leaving a thin layer of the plastic,,

another thought is the overhead slide projector film printed cut out and placed in the epoxy like you did the wire then placed between sheets of waxpaper.

Thanks kb2rocket for the information. I like the outcome of your epoxy method. I think it will have a great application for small transparent wings or fins. I carve a lot of flycatchers that we find here in South Texas and small insects somewhere in the carving will be a plus. This has been a very valuable thread and learning experiece for me. Thank ya all for participating.

hey I just got another crazy idea why dont you use real dragon fly wings if the scale is right .
after they can be found dead here and there and I dont think they would mind if you borrowed there wings
.
also it would be fun answering questions like wow how did you make those "they look so real"

I took the grandkids to the beach this weekend and there was thousands of draggonflies on the dunes and we found several dead bugs on the beach. They are very strong and would look great. Just one problem the judges at woodcarving shows will disqualify the entry if it contains any parts of live animals/insects in the display. The idea is to create the most lifelike rendition of the real thing.

yes I agree if you are going to enter a contest you must follow the rules
.
I was just thinking wouldn't it be great to be disqualifyed for using actual animal parts when the truth is that you didnt its just that your work is THAT GOOD
.
that WOOD be the ultimate compliment
