Default A Chickadee for granddaughter

An old carver I met once a few years ago gave me a bird blank in Tupolo wood, so when Octavia asked me...."Grampie, will you make me a bird and put it in a nest with baby birds?" I had a place to begin. Turned out pretty well for my first, I think, thanks to Hugh Park's article on Black Capped Chickadee. Only problem is, I wouldn't get to burn feathers in, she's already...."Grampie, we need to paint it now, you carve so slow!" A four year old has limited patience and a bird in hand to her is more important than accuracy!

Paint it, Grandpa! She wants it and she wants it now because you made it just for her. A great memory.

Yep, do it HER way! She'll treaure that long into her future, and I'll even bet she will tenderly hand that over to one of her children or grandchildren.

As you can see, I have much to learn about bird painting and finishing, but it is obvious that Octavia doesn't mind. She's been talking away with those two birds since she arrived today. "This" is the most important stuff, she's my favorite client!!! Her hugs are priceless payment!

Ya know ... there are times that not having done an absolutely great job of carving, burning and coloring is the best thing ever. If you had made it perfect Mom probably would have made her put it up on a shelf to save and 'keep nice'.

But just as you made them they are perfect for playing with, enjoying and sharing kisses.

I don't know if it happens to boys, but I know there is not one girl on this forum that didn't recieve a doll so beautiful you weren't allowed to play with it.

Good job, Granddad.
