Just monkey around with a piece of wood and a knife while looking in a mirror.

hi turlish13, first welcome to wci :-) we usually are a very friendly and helpful group...

so to your question, it sounds like a fun idea :-)

i carved an orang as a relief once, you can see on my homepage if you like, but that was my only carving of a monkey...., but i try explain how i would go about it... first, i would ask myself, what kind of monkey want i carve ? a shimpanse, an orang ? then i look pictures of these monkeys, to get a good idea how they really look...
next is, do you want carve a relief of a monkey, or do you want carve in the round ? (i somehow think you mean that)
if that is your first carving at all, i would try make it simple, so for example, not carve all the fingers and toes, but only a shape for the whole and, and whole foot... now, you have an idea what you want do, i would try make a drawing of what i want carve, and then rough it out in wood. that is, cut the big shapes first. head, body, legs, arms... sounds complicated ? you see, a monkey is somewhat similar to a human, so you can for example look how people carve humans, we have lots of examples here on the site, and then you change a little the features to make it a monkey, for example make arms much longer, and snout is very much protuded etc... i hope this helps a little... let us see a picture of the monkey you want carve, and we will help you more :-)

Doris, you are the nice one of the group to be so helpful and you did offer good instructions and your Orang relief carving is a good example and your web site is fun to visit.
Thanks, Don

I think WCI had a pattern for a monkey in one of its issues. If no one here remembers I will go through them and see if I can find it. I think but not certain it was authored by Dave Sabol

Thanks Claude.
There is an article in issue 18 A simsian story by the staff of WCI but the one I was thinking of was issue 15 chimp carver by Jack Kochan it has a patterns for a chimp. you may be able to order that issue or just the article from WCI. I had my authors mixed up.
