| | Re: Carving an elephant Thank you for the compliment about the elephant head carving. it was one of 4 pair to be fitted on the top of pillars in the hotel, it is a distant memory from around 1990. I have photos of the process and will look them out.
The baby elephant was carved from laminated douglas fir plywood. The process is relatively, easy
useful for creating very large pieces, requires a jigsaw, chisels, glue and brass screws.
I use this process for creating figures and animals for stage sets. If there is an interest out there I will gladly explain the process.
I've tried to attach a photo of another example of the method. |

I have been enjoying your work. It is really excellent. THe figurehead is just awesome. I would love to see more and to see this process, as I often am trying to improve when I need to build up for a carving.

| | Re: Carving an elephant Sculptorcarver.....Just had a run through your site and the Elephant head piece is outstanding!!! The ![006[1]](http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/images/smilies/006[1].gif) Elephant is a real eye catcher, and I've certainly never run across a plywood carving before! Gives the piece a special depth and flowing effect though! I'd be interested in hearing more on how it's done!

I have a commission for a life-size dolphin which I shall make in plywood. I will open a tution thread and go through it stage by stage. from the initial planning to completion. It should be noted that as I earn my living from creating sculptures some of my methods may not be those of the purist, It will be the method I used to carve the baby elephant. |

| | Re: Carving an elephant Anita,
How is your elephant coming along? Were you able to get the plans from the Library.
Bill went to carvers gallery and saw your Rhino. It was beautiful. Is the pattern available also how difficult is mesquite to carve. I understand that it is pretty hard and I don't use power , Can it be carved without power tools.

Thanks for the compliments on the Rhino
I didn't use a pattern, I gererally get lots of pictures and make up the pose that I'm after or think that will work with the wood avail. As far as Mesquite, I enjoy working with it. It is a hard wood but, as I do all power the hardness isn't a big problem. Let me know if I can be of any help to you.

Knowing my luck, it went to my bulk mailbox or something. Thx for reminding me though, I will have to request it again. Lately I have been spending a lot of time on a large portrait and carving only on Thurs, the night I go sit with the carving club here in town. Once this portrait is done, I want to dive into my elephant carving, have it done by Feb! (I'm slow and very new at carving!) I will keep everyone posted and hope to post WIP pics to get C&C here.

Do you mind me asking where this piece will be going? I enjoyed the submerged otter piece, so I am curious if the dolphin will have any real water incorporated into the final presentation.
Seems you've done/are doing many of my favorites, so I am especially excited to learn more about how you do these pieces. I am looking forward to following your thread! Thanks again for sharing!
