I did one several years ago. The pattern was in wood magazine. I remember seeing several pictures like it in chip chats and that one thing I did wrong was not putting in a lot of wrinkles in its body. I also glued up pine board to get the thickness I wanted. I don't have a digital camera to send a picture.

Robert - Do you recall if the pattern was a realistic-looking elephant? I was thinking I would like to add the skin texture. Any idea what mag it was from? I could check out back issues.

Frank - Pics would be fabulous! Thank you!

Here's a suggestion. http://www.art.info/shepherd.htm

David Shepard is a British artist living in Africa. To me, he is just about the only one who really captures the true essence of scenery and the animals who live there. Photos are okay but they can 't capture the feelings behind the picture like a painting can. My wife and I lived in Africa for 15 years and David's paintings, especially of elephants, are better than any photo of the animal we ever snapped and believe me we snapped a lot of photos.

Anita,
It was several years ago . The name of the magazine was Wood Magazine. Back then they had carving and scrollwork. I wish I had kept the magazine as they did a nice job for a base and I forgot how I did it.

Thank you for posting those Frank.

The finished carving may be a while... I just started work on a couple murals at a new church and am also working on a very large drawing for an upcoming art show! The gallery is allowing me just one piece so I guess I better make it good. But I hope to have the elephant ready for another local art show next April. Don't forget me by then!

Thank you for the great suggestion Lynn. If I ever succeed at carving animals, I would hope to be able to portray the spirit of the creature, not just capture its likeness. Mr. Shepard's work definitely does that with a lot of warmth and personality. Good stuff!
