Well congrats Bob.. Not only did you carve a Raven but you did it in the Kwakiutl style.

Cant wait to see it I am sure it is awesome.

You see being Native is not a matter of blood it is a way of life.

So when do you start on the moon mask? J

Hey that is a great job, what kind of wood are you using. It is something that has always interested me, and that is to carve a totem pole. I never understood their meaning before.

Plain ol basswood. I carved it to shape with chisels and knife and then detailed it with my knives. Then started sanding it by hand with 80-grit up to 400 grit. Used my (very dull) mini chisels to do some detailing and finished it with paste wax. My dad always said to apply the wax wiht 0000 steel wool, but it left little pieces behind in the wood, so I think I'll try fine scotchbright pads next time.

Well done Bob, that's a beautiful carving. The style has flow and mystery, all the characters of raven. Good job.

You might try applying the wax
let it dry
then go over it with the steel wool or scotch brite

I like to go over my finished pieces with a scotch brite pad
then a piece of plain brown papper usually just ter a piece off of a
sac (brown papper bag)

Great job Bob I am sure you are proud of that carving. Are you going to leave it natural or are you going to paint it? Either way you did a super job.
