Default Who carved and painted this Curlew?

I purchased this Curlew decoy carving (see attached jpegs) a couple of years ago, however it is not signed by the maker and the seller did not know it's history. Does any of the members know or have an idea who could be the maker. Thanks!

With one leg, I doubt it is from a US carver, probably Mexico, Cina or something like that, altho ya never know. Good luck, interesting piece.

Hi Cliff, that is the way the old gunning shore birds were made, they were called stick ups. A common practice, used on modern shore birds.
I don't know the carver either, but its a nice one.

No idea who the carver might be, but it's a nice looking piece.

Welcome to Port Republic Decoys These people have a great deal of knowledge about decoys. (I don't know if it's free or not ... send them a photo and find out)
And Port Republic is New Jersey! Your decoy looks New Jersey to me. I have many birds and 99% of them are 'Jersey.

Nancy, thanks for the link. I will try that and see. I know it is not an antique, the glass eyes are too perfect. The artist/carver has got to be someone who has done this before and is probably still doing it. The posture, shape, markings and size tells me it is from someone who has knowledge about the Species. Thanks again. Jose

I have always heard them called "smoothies" and thats a good one...there is a classification for them in bird carving shows.
