Default Carousel animals?

I love carousel animals and my dream is to carve them. Right now I am finishing a Big-horn Sheep that is actually a rocking animal but will be done in the carousel tradition.
I wonder if there are any others that have an interest in this form of carving/ sculpture? Thanks, Greg

Hi gmarq, you might take a look in the Carvers Gallery http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/gallery/ I believe I have seen images of carousel horses/animals in there. Please show us your Big Horn Sheep when you get it finished or even while in progress. We love those too!
Kathy

There is a pattern for a carousel Horse in the Ultimate Carving Pattern mag that WCI put out and if my memory is correct Bob D wrote a real nice article a few issues back on carousel history

HI greg
I don't do any carousel figures yet, they are a bit beyond my level of ability at this time but in the future, who knows??.
I do have two excellant books on the subject:# 1 is " Carving Carousel Animals-from 1/8 scale to full size " by H. Leroy Marlow. It has numerous patterns and how to advice. # 2 is " Carousel Carving - miniature to full size classics and originals " by Bruce A. White. Both are published by Sterling Publishers. Both are very good reference books on the subject. You might find them available through this site. Hope this is of some help. Looking forward to seeing your Bighorn

Hi Greg,
I too, would like to carve full sized carosel animals someday. There is a good little school that teaches this in Soddy Daisy, TN. Just about 20 miles outside of Chattanooga. Bud Ellis is a very nice man and he and his students carved 52 carosel animals in two years time, to refurbish an old carosel in the park in Chattanooga. They did a beautiful job. The place is called "Horsing Around". Bud put a book out with patterns for various animals and lots of info on how to proceed.

Also, in Ohio somewhere....I think Mansfield, there is a carosel carver of huge talent. Joe Leonard. He did put out a VCR tape a few years back, showing the steps involved in carving a full sized animal in his studio. He carved the horses for the carosel in Disney, Paris France.

There is also a man who comes to the John Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC (near Murphy) who teaches carosel carving. But if you keep checking around, I bet there is something out there a lot closer to your location.

For now, I just have plans to do father Christmas figures riding replecas of antique carosel animals. I did one riding the carosel chicken sometime back. That was fun. But full size would be more fun.

Thanks you guys, Soddy Daisy? I love that! I like the idea of the santa on the carousel.
I've got a couple of those books and several others on carousels in general. The bighorn is on hold 'til after Christmas, but I'll have a progress report soon. Greg
