| | Re: butternut bear That is beautiful wood indeed. This butternut looks so good that I could almost eat it!! Greg: The Nature Conservancy who owns the 900 acre preserve where I work told us that the butternut trees here are also refered to as white walnut so I'd say that it's definitely not a softwood. |

| | Re: butternut bear dave, good looking bear, butternut is a very prteyy wood when finished correctly, sometimes it will come out to dark but i like the finish you have chosen for the bear.
greg,
i have carved butternut it is not as hard as you may think. it is not as soft as basswood but not all that hard to me.it can be a little splintery but not as bad as cedar would be. as a matter of fact butternut is softer than cedar to me anyway.

| | Re: butternut bear Actually, I think it carves as good as basswood, a little different, hard to explain, but not hard.....there is a kind of "crunchy" sound when you make a cut....and sands better than basswood I believe. One problem...better plan out your carving....it is sacreligious to paint butternut! LOL |
