Best way I know is Gut ir first and make sure the insides are washed throughly. Hang it up to cool down, Next day use your best sharp skinning knife and skin it out, then quarter it and wrap in freezer paper. Let it almost freeze as it lends to better carving. Take the almost frozen quartered abd start carving up for steaks or Deer burger. I like the backstraps or Loins to butterfly. Oppppppppps wrong type of "Buck Carving", Sorry!!I'll go back in to my little world. They know me best there. Didn't say they liked me but know me. LOL!!!!!

Hi Dave, looks like you have a good start on your 'Buck' relief carving. I always start my relief carvings from the background and work forward. The background will be your deepest, then as you come forward would be the mid-ground and then the foreground. I notice what appears to be tree limbs, which would be your next depth and then your buck. I think you could probably go a little deeper with your back ground, then work on carving out the limbs. I always save my subject for the last until I get the feeling of depth I'm looking for. This is an example of what I'm talking about--the board itself is a little less than 1" and the background was taken down to 1/4". I used a pattern by Susan Irish www.carvingpatterns.com--she also contributes to this site. Hope this helps, always happy to answer questions too. Hi Dave, another thought for you. There are many fine carving clubs in the USA maybe there is one near you. Here is a link to the Club Search on this site Wood Carving Illustrated - How To Magazine for Carvers , try here too the Relief & Chip Carving Forum Relief and Chip Carving - Woodcarving Illustrated Message Board Also another thought would be to check your local newspaper events or do an Online search using your town/city/state name and the word carving club. Wood carvers are a great group of folks just full of knowledge and experience. Our club the Prescott Wood Bee Carvers in Prescott, Arizona are Mentors for several young people. We are a wonderful mix of ages and carving types. Smile Hope this helps, and Happy Holidays. Kathy </IMG>

I have a book Wildlife Carving in Relief by Lora S. Irish and it has great instructions for depth and shadows. You might be able to get it at your local library.
