I am looking for a copy of the Part 1- Carving the Bobwhite Quail from the July-August 1994 issue of Chip & Chats, The publisher only goes back to 1995.
Will pay the cost involved of copying & postage.

I've got Chip Chat issues back to 89 and I'll look tomorrow to confirm that I've got that one--and let you know then. I'd be glad to mail you a copy if someone else hasn't already found it for you and offered before I get home tomorrow.

Ok, I've checked and I do have the July-Aug issue of 1994 Chip Chats, but I do not find Part I or II or anything else on quail carving. Do you have a page number, author, or another issue to check?

I'd be glad to help if you can narrow down the location.

Hi Ho,
Is that the same as a California quail? Wildfowl had an article on them back in the 90's.

Both names have been associated with the same quail, California and Gambrel Quail.

I carved a stylize one several years ago and everyone who saw it(in the family) wanted one. Now I don't care to carve one. I used butternut wood and left only used three coats of paste wax with drying time and buffing inbetween each coat.

Kind of wished I had saved the butternut wood.

Safety first, then enjoy.

We have several adult Gambel Quail in the yard and there must be at least 25 little ones...they are really fun to watch! Like clumsy teenagers!

OK education time! My wife looked up Quail in the Audubon Western bird, field edition book...whew that was enough reading for me! Anyway California Quail and Gambel or different birds...the Gambel has little short slashes of white on the breast. Too involved to describe both in detail, but they are two different birds. Class over, resume carving!

Interesting!!! I guess these old time hunters around here don't know their birds after all. I know the gambrel quail has a top bonnet(if that is what they are called). Depending on how one wants it to look, can carve it thin or thick. I have tried both and people seem to like it either way.

Well you are welcome! But actually, it is my wife that is the expert on birds and animals...we have a number of books around so it is pretty easy for her to tell me (that way I don't have to clutter my mind!

) The Audobon books are really good, but unfortunately, the photos aren't fine enough for carving detail...at least for me, but eyesight not what it used to be :rolleyes:
