Ohioelcamino, Lori Corbett's web site Whispering Eagle Studio has great tutorials on carving and painting. Also www. IWCA.com has tutorials and I especially like Roger's on detailing feathers via burning pen and stones. Glad you are interested in birds, you will have a great time. Dick

In keeping with the Lori Corbett theme, I'd recommend picking up her book on songbird carving. She has quite a tutorial on bird anatomy, feathers and specific components of a bird. The meat of the book is the carving of 3 different species. My first carving of a Red-breasted Nuthatch was helped along greatly by Lori's instructions. The book just has a LOT of really helpful information for a beginner. Heres a link to the book on Amazon. And, of course, it's published by Fox Chapel so I'm sure they'd be happy to sell it to you too. |

Welcome to the world of bird carving. For excellent teaching of how to power carve birds pick up any one of Roz Daisey's books. She is a great teacher. Check out her web site. And Lori Corbett's book is very good to understand anatomy. The cedar waxwing is a good project also.

A few years back,I purchased Lorie Corbett's bookand two of Roz Daisy's books they are both an excellent start for you,as to become the minimal or beginning bird carver, knowing the birds' anatomy will make you birds where they can at least be recognized as a bird. I still refer to both of these great bird carvers' books. Oscar. |

Both books mentioned are excellent reference material. Although Lori is currently going to online school, she is very helpful. When you have a question, just shoot her a note and she'll get back to you.

x3 or x4 for Lori Corbett's book. I carved every bird in her tutorial section and enjoyed every minute. She has excellent discussion's on tools, knives and then how-to-do it. I favor more stylized birds and her book made it very easy to adapt the birds to my style. I was a total novice when I bought her book.
