Default 1st dog carving

Ok here is my first attempt on a carving of a shiba puppy. I did this only from a photo and I don't have a bandsaw so I had to carve it all by hand my wrist is killing me Anyways its not perfect as I was having a hard time between figure and relief as you can see in the photo but think it turned out ok. I guess I learned alot from this... One I need a a bandsaw

Very nice work Tammy, you definetly captured that Puppy look. Hows you bird carving coming along. Tammy here's a thought, take a look in your local paper in the "Buy & Sell" and see if anyone has a used Bandsaw for sale, you might get lucky. Thats the one thing about getting into this hobby, you need some expensive tools to get going on the right track.

Thanks Ken actually I will do that now. We have what is called the "free trader" well wish it was free I am going to start working on another chickadee but it won't be as nice as yours I have the habitat to work on for my blue jay. I was going to do a fence post old cedar with barb wire on it but do I acutally have to carve it or can I just use a fence post. Don't know how I would carve somethign like that. any thoughts?

How are you doing? what are you working on. Do you sell your birds?

Hi Tammy, unless your competing with the Bluejay I would just use a old fence post. The barbed wire is easy enough to make from copper wire.

Keep me e-mailing me for your next Chickadee, I'll try and help as much as possible.

And you asked if my carvings are for sale, not at this time. I'm carving for myself, I only have 5 carvings and my wife is already giving me weird looks as to where the heck are we supposed to put these dust collectors. Maybe in the future I'll try and sell a few but most people just simply do not have a clue as to what goes into creating one of these carvings and likewise cannot grasp what they are worth. We have a TV show up here in Canada called "How It's Made" and in one segment they did one on making decoys. To be honest it was embarrassing as to how juvenile they where, absolutely garbage, yet they where selling for a couple of hundred dollars.....oops that in Canadian currency which equates to about $20 US.......LOL

Amen to the "how its made" duck decoys, the "artist" was real good with a drill press and a sander.

Good idea. Also try Craig’s List (local listings to you), that’s where I found I nice bandsaw about a year ago.

Your pup looks great Tammy you've caught the look for sure. I've been meaning to do one of my collie - she is often found in a very similar pose.
