Pretty Darn Good for a first ever attempt. And now the learning curve begins....keep the chips flying looking forward to seeing how much better your second turns out.

Ken

Note: if this is a Black Capped Chickadee the cape feathers should be a soft grey.

Just perfectly fine for your first bird! I've heard that with practice and repetition, they get better and better. I practice a lot and live in hope. ;-)

I am so impressed with your little bird! I have enjoyed this thread very much, I am looking my little bird over and trying to see where I can make improvements. Did you use gesso after burning it and before painting it? Also, where the legs attach, is that built up with wood putty? I've been trying to figure out how to do the leg feathering, thinking I'd have to carve it.
Okay, just re-read your post and saw where you used epoxy putty for the legs, so answers that question! Maybe if I'd do more reading!

Sappy: Yes I used three very thin coats of Gesso before painting it. I used epoxy putty for the legs and used a carving knife to sculpt the texture in the epoxy. I would love to see pictures of your bird. cheers
