| | | What are you carving now? Let's see Goodmorning Gang,
I have been flat out doing show's and commissions for the last month and I finally have a break this weekend. I saw Tim's thread where he told us about the two hearts he is carving. It prompted me to start this thread because I am always interested in what people are carving at this moment. Myself believe it or not I am not carving anything for the first time in a long time. Having said that I do have another commission to do 30 feet up in a cedar tree that I have been putting off because I really dont want to do it, but I guess the time has come. So let us see what your working on by posting pictures on picture trail or on your own site's. Sometimes I get inspired by seeing other people carving just maybe someone will get inspired seeing what you are doing. If you dont have the ability to post at least let us know what your working on.

I've been putsying around for about 20 minutes a day in between home projects and work. Doing a relief carving on a piece of 5/8' plywood that I undercut (always measure at least 3 times). I know you can't carve plywood but I don't seem to be able to cut it straight either. The practice doesn't make me feel so bad that I wasted a piece of wood. I'll do some carving once the back and hip totally give out. Need to come to the board every few days for inspiration.

| | | Re: What are you carving now? Let's see Hi, thanks for the compliment. You say you can't carve the plywood straight. Maybe it is because the grain of the plywood goes in both directions. Each layer is going in a different direction. I believe that is part of the stength of plywood. With the grain going in different direcstions, the knife or chisel is bound to try and follow the grain structure. Just a thought, I'm more than likely way out in left field. |

| | Re: What are you carving now? Let's see Nice looking kestrel, Hugh! We have these guys swooping through our bird feeders pretty regularly, making good use of the smorgasbord of smaller birds we provide! Yours is a dead ringer!
I'm still chipping away at that steam engine relief, of course, the stupid puffin I've been at for the last year, and now a scale sized witch on a broom, that will be the model for a 4 foot up- sized one, eventually.
But mostly I've been putzing in the yard and fishing......winter will be here soon enough. Then it's time to carve.

How did you train that Bird to stay till you got the picture taken?
That is a great job you did. I am always intimidated by birdcarvers. You'all make me feel like a whittler, with all the detail you put into your carvings.
I have several projects going, but nothing finished at this time.
I am working on 'The Florentine Man' copied from Michaelangelo, a Plains Indian Bust, and some plain ole Woodspirits.
BUT, I did get some new pictures put on my website, thanks to my Daughter. It is all I can do to carve, much less put them on the site.
I just finished a class with Gary Falin, and got the done. Learned a lot about Caracture Carving, and painting of same.
Take a look at the update, gang. www.carvingsfromcoolholler.com thanks.
