I've wanted to carve a WV Mountaineer figure for years now but have not been able to find any good reference material. I've noticed several carvers here with WV locations and thought maybe someone could help me locate what I'm looking for. I have checked the internet, but without success. I'd like to get either some good photos, drawings, etc., or perhaps better yet, a ceramic type figurine with some good detail. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Mike WVU, '73 |

Mike, I have a better idea. How about a Pitt Panther love spoon? There's a lot of love between Pitt and WVU. Wink Mike

Hey Mike, I am always careful with the WVU mascot. Well the statue that is the emblem of WVU. Heavly trademarked and aggressively protected. Notice I did not say copyrighted. That said , if you are doing the piece for yourself , there are somethings I will tell you. 1) the statue of the mountianeer is in front of the mountian lair. Easy to get photos if you want to take a little trip. 2) for a one time personal use you can make one, that should not be an issue. That is if you wish to make an excat copy of the mountianeer. If this is what your looking for I might be able to help. Ash |

Mike - I feel the love but I think I'll pass on the panther spoon. By the way, nice job of carving the spoon. In spite of the rivalry, I like it. Gear Dog - thanks for the picture. You're right, Davy Crockett and even Daniel Boone would be similar. Ash - yes, I would be doing the carving for myself, personally. A trip to Morgantown for pictures, however, would probably not be feasible just now but I do accept your offer to help. Thanks guys for your responses. Mike |

Ash, Your sure right about those schools being territorial about their trademarks. University of Wisconsin not long ago sued the Waukee (Iowa) Highschool for having a large W in their school logo. In my opinion they were not simular enough to have been an infringement (In fact I thought it quite petty), but the highschool had to change their logo. They had the same logo for about 30 yrs but now since Waukee is the fastest growing suburb in the Des Moines area it became an issue?

Trademarks are really nasty to deal with. If they changed thier's and it was a W, I would think they did not want a court fight, or they were force to change by the State. A single letter can't be trademarked , it has to be the Art work design. But if you want some interesting reading check out trademark battle and PRS/gibson. Two guitar makers, one made their trademark a single cut guitar and then sued the other one for trademark infringement , for making a single cut guitar that looked like their trademark. Considering that 60 percent of the guitars are single cuts , if they had won the first case , they would have bankrupt the other manufacturers , one at a time. Trademark is no where near as forgiving as a copyright. Another is Coke , there are some amazing lawsuits from trademarks. Ash |

Cap, what's a Nittany? My wife is a Penn State grad and I'm from Pitt. My daughter (now at Pitt) considered Penn State and some others. I got some good photos of the Nittany Lion while we were there for our campus visit. Pitt has some good panther sculptures too. I've seen good TV images of the WVU Mountaineer, but never 3-d likenesses. Thanks all for the kind words about my spoon. It's carved from Alaskan Yellow Cedar, BTW. Mike
