Default Would you redue an old carving???

When I look at some of my first carvings I shudder and I instantly would like to change some of their features, redue them, my husband tells me "NO " but everytime it gets to me especially after reading the "eye carving suggestions" " ,what do you all think? Has anybody done it?

I would say no. I think it is all about progress and getting better. If you redo the eyes on a carving you did, say in 1990, how would you or anyone else for that matter see if you have in fact gotten better.

I still have the first Wrangler I carved. He's setting in my gallery right next to the last one I finished. He's much older just like I am. He has a little dust on him and maybe a few knicks from being handled over the years, again just like me. But he has one very important thing that any new carving I might do will never have and thats a history. I can look at him and see where I was going when I first started out and I can clearly see when I finish a new carving that he was the one who showed me the way. Redo him? You've got to be kidding. He's the best carving I ever did!

Very well said Lynn, my feelings as well. The Stick that I'm working on shows my progress on faces. I finished one today and saw the improvement from the first face. That makes it encouraging and besides the Face is on the same Stick. It's my History Learning Stick, their is no changing History,only the Future. Merle

Some of my most treasured carvings are ones I did years ago. It's sort of like viewing old family photographs.

At first thought I would have said "yes". But at second thought, I would say "no". Now I don't really know for sure? I guess if I really had one I couldn't live with, I'd go back over it, redo it. Unless someone was against it being redone. I guess it would be entirely up to the artist.

Hi Alice,

I've been told by others and I tend to agree that a carving should be finished and left as is. That said, I have an Indian cane that I thought was great. A friend of mine needed one but refrused to use one, too proud. I thought if I gave hime the cane he would use it. I took it out and was dismayed by how lopsided his face was. I started to fix it and in the meanwhile, my friend passed away. There's no point to the story, six of one half a dozen of the other.
