Default Would like opinions please

Hugh is pretty much wrapped up. The finish is on, the base done. I only have to attach the head to the base and then I will hand wax it. My question: the base is walnut with a nice finish, but I am wondering if I should leave the bottom of the base bare (but finished wood) as it is now or put black felt on the bottom. Will this "cheapen it" or be a better thing to do? What do you think?

I have put green or brown felt on the bottom of a lot of things and never felt it "cheapened" the carving.....on the contrary. Annnnd it protects the table or shelf it sits on!

I agree with Hi-ho
Use the felt, it will do to things for the carving , protect the shelves and keep the carving up to reduce moisture build up that can cause rings.

I know another opinion ......=)

Okay. I was leaning toward the felt, just wasn't sure if the wood bottom was most desirable. So I will do the felt. Thanks guys. Off to the dentist now.

I'd leave it just bare wood but attached a card with some felt dots. Those dots will come off and pick up dirt and don't look good to someone looking closely at a piece. Doing a large piece of felt for the bottom just magnifies the problem. I used to do the felt but got tire of it looking terrible after a while.

Finish the bottom then attach the dots. Nothing like an unfinish piece(bare wood) on the underneth side to show that beforethought did not go in to the finish carving.
Dots are fine and over a period of time will come off. I have several that Have the felt dots and they have been on for years.
I agree on not putting felt on the bottom side of the base.. Looks good for a while.. JHMO

My vote goes with Lynn.... I generally give my carving bottoms and bases a light sanding, sign and date , and send them off with bare wood. If there's nothing rough or protruding on the bottom then it shouldn't pose a hazard for any finished surfaces that it comes in contact with, especially if it's sanded smooth.
