Default workbench

Hello all

I want to purchase a workbench for my carving work and woodworking work too.
I have found several workbenches made by ANKE (German manufacturer) and SJÖBERGS (Swedish manufacturer)
Could any of you recommend to me any o these?
Meassures?

Thanks.

These are pages from Internet about workbenches.

Both make nice benchs but they can be expensive. Don't confuse a woodworkers bench with a woodcarvers. Woodcarving benches are usually taller because you're not sawing and planing on them.
There are some good books on benches such as:
The Workbench A Complete Guide to your Perfect Bench by Lon Schleining
Tools, Equipment, and Materials by Chris Pye
Bill Judt's website
Start by identifying the features you need for the type of carving you do. Then buy or build what you need. I just finished my bench. I started with a section of bowling alley for the bench top. I tweaked the plans on Bill Judt's website. I think its unique and very nice but I wouldn't do another one. Too many nails and other problems to overcome. What I saved in $$$ I spent in time.
Hope this helps,
Jim

Thanks Jim.

I think that build one is the best idea, a workbench customized.

Can I find a design of how to make a workbench?

Thansk again.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Â*Here is a link to Bill Judt's site. Â*These are the plans I tweaked for my bench.

I've placed a picture of my bench on the PictureTrail site in the Carving Aids folder. I haven't mounted a vise on it, yet. I'll probably make drawers or a cabinet to mount under it next summer. I want to use it a while to get a feel for what I really need.
Hope this helps.

Hey Jim, you have made a fine work with your workbench.

I have a big question!!

It is important that the workbench has a tool tray at the rear of benchtop? or for carving works is better a flat benchtop without the tool tray?

Thanks and best regards.

Personally, I don't think that a tool tray is necessary. I think it comes down to individual preferrence. I've never carved on a bench that has one so I don't have a good point of reference.
What is necessary is that tools needed for the project are close at hand but not in the way or at risk of being damaged. Tools can be set to one side if there is enough room on the bench. I have another bench along-side my carving bench where I can set things and it has a peg-board back and drawer for storage.
Some carvers make wall mounted racks to arrange tools on. Others make portable vertical racks using PVC pipe (I think there was an article on this in WCI a few issues ago). Another option is a rolling tool chest with drawers like mechanics use. They're portable and provide both ample storage and a flat surface to lay tools on between uses.
Just some suggestions. I hope this helps. Main this is, don't forget to carve.
Jim
